9 tips to overcome a motivational slump

Regardless of your usual motivational state, there will be days when you don't feel motivated at all. If you try to surround yourself with positive thoughts and people, you will see that the "days of downturn" are less and less and more separated from each other. However, if you find that your days without motivation are too many, you are probably on the verge of a motivational slump.

True motivation comes from within. You should not constantly rely on other people to motivate you because they will not always be there when you need them. This does not mean that they do not worry, but each person has their own life and their own concerns.. You must become your own focus of motivation and learn tools and strategies that you will always have available when your motivation declines..

What to do when a motivational slump is approaching

1. Learn to recognize the slump

Most people don't recognize a slump until they are in it. However some signs will help you identify it  and to escape from him before he catches you.

Signs like letting your mind wander in the middle of a task and consequently taking twice as long to complete. Sometimes when we are about to finish something we leave it halfway to take a break with the excuse that we will return to it later and with greater strength. It's like we sabotage ourselves.

You will not find a moment of greater motivation to finish something than during the moments immediately before achieving it.. Do not think that by taking that break then you will come back with more strength.

2. Learn new ways to do the same things.

Many times our motivation drops because we have simply gotten bored of doing the same thing in the same way every day. Both our attention and our motivation are strongly linked.

If you always perform a repetitive task in the same way, over time your attention will decrease and as a consequence it will affect your motivation. Try to be creative where possible and alter your schedule to perform the same tasks at different times of the day..

3. Imagine how you would be yourself in the future if your motivation never decreased

Try to envision yourself a few years in the future if you have the same motivation to study every day. It is very likely that the person you have in mind has already finished their studies and is working happily on what they like.

In the same way, imagine how you would be in a couple of years if every day you had the motivation to do sports and follow a balanced diet. Seriously, stop for a moment, close your eyes and visualize that person. If you have the power to imagine it, you have the power to create it. There is no motivating force greater than that power.

4. Perfection does not exist

Many times we lose motivation to do something because we are too perfectionists. We don't want to deliver a good job, we want to do something very good. Better to get 70% results every day rather than 100% every 3 days.

5. Start collecting material on personal development

In the form of audiotapes, books, or simply by saving web page addresses on the subject. When you notice that your motivation wanes, take a look around those pages and read those articles that will always be at your disposal..

6. Play sports

Those who know me know that I love doing sports and at times I have to admit that I can become a bit obsessive. I've had great long moments of motivational downturns in my life.

However, since I started doing sports continuously, these moments have practically disappeared. With sport we release endorphins that provide us with a feeling of well-being and lay the foundations for an optimal motivational state.

7. Learn from the successes and failures of others.

There are hundreds of biographies about people who ended up succeeding despite the fact that for many years they only obtained negative results. Try to identify the common elements that kept them motivated despite not getting any results.

8. Compete

Especially in sports. There is no greater motivation to do sports than to join a competition. Your level doesn't matter at all. The sport has become very popular and practically in any town you will find popular races in which you can sign up.

For 4 years I have been running with my friend Jaime and from time to time we participate in a popular half marathon. A couple of months ago we participated in the Torrevieja half marathon. Then we went to eat with our girlfriends and even though they had never run, we convinced them to join a competition with us..

We set a date and a goal: 10km. from Almoradí on May 4. The truth is that we did not trust them. However, since that day they have been going out for a run 3 days a week and have already managed to run 10 kilometers in a row. If they had not signed up for that competition, which is more than a month away, surely they would not have started running.

9. Check your progress

Make records of everything you are getting. There is no greater motivation than visualizing yourself the status of your achievements. In addition, this record will help you to be alert in case your productivity decreases and a motivational downturn approaches..
