How to have good mental and physical health

We all need simple and practical things to improve our quality of life. To feel more satisfied with our life experience. Luckily, new technologies allow us today to find the best physical and mental health courses to develop both in person and online.

In this article we are going to present a very useful method to improve the quality of life.

the wheel of life

This is a very simple tool, used a lot in coaching, that allows you to quantitatively assess the different areas of your life. What it is about is to draw a wheel with different spokes and in each one of them place an aspect that is very relevant to you.

For example:

  • Family
  • Work and money
  • Physical Health
  • Social relationships
  • Emotional state
  • Leisure

This is just an example, to understand us. In your case, let the topics that come to you come out first. Your body is wise, the most important ones for you will come out. Make groups of 6 areas at most. The simpler the better.

Now rate each area from 0 to 10; where 0 is that you feel very bad in that aspect (and coincides with the center of the wheel) and 10 that you are great (in the outer circumference)

In the example:

  • Family: 6
  • Work and money: 7
  • Physical health: 4
  • Social relationships: 6
  • Emotional state: 5
  • Leisure: 6

Connect the dots and there appears your wheel of life.

So far, this tool helps you become aware which is your Current situation. It allows you quantify, in a very tangible way, how your life feels right now. You can see in which areas you feel satisfied and in which others not so much.

Taking this test, later in the future, allows you to quantify your evolution. You will be able to see, on paper, the results of your efforts.

From here the real work begins, to improve your quality of life.

Your standards of living

Take the average of your areas. In this case (6 + 7 + 4 + 6 + 5 + 6) / 6 = 5.7

This data gives you an idea of where they are located your current living standards.

In the case of this example, the person feels that his life situation is a bit "regular": 5.7. You feel like you are at a low point in your life. And, without being bad at all, you can clearly see that there are several areas for improvement.

We usually move between a hairpin, with a minimum and a maximum. And what it costs, really, is to get out of there.

With the previous data, if you feel good, it is that you are close to your upper limit. And if you feel bad, you are close to your lower limit. But it takes a lot to get out of that fork.

Imagine, as if you were the person in this example, that your fork was between 5 and 7. When you feel that you fall close to 5, and this happens unconsciously, you feel that things are going fatal. And you take action to change and improve aspects that you do not like.

And when all this work brings you to a subjective experience around 7, it seems like everything starts to work, you relax, and you fall back down. This situation is sure to be familiar to you.

The difficult thing is to get off the fork. And this is so because that fork is defined by your belief system.

Exceed your standards

In order to improve your quality of life you must exceed your standards and move the fork up. This is: go from (5-7) to (6-8), for example.

And how is this done? To achieve it you must break your belief system. Next we will see how to get it.

Pick an area, and only one, and make it a point to improve there. If you want to improve in everything, in the end you do not improve in anything.

For example: "Physical health".

You want to improve your physical health from a 4 to a 6. For this you consider doing physical exercise and improving your diet. If you manage to go to the Gym 3 times a week and eat fruit 3 times a day, you will rate yourself a 6.

In your case, you can do the same for any of the specific areas that you have chosen. Here you have ideas to carry out an action plan or how to define specific objectives so that the goal you have set for yourself can be achieved.

And finally, it only remains to put yourself into action.

The 3 effects

Next we are going to see 3 effects that can be produced when performing this whole system.

The contagion effect

So, when you work with self-discipline and in a focused way in one area and you achieve your goal, it turns out that it improves your self-esteem, your self-confidence, your self-satisfaction,… and automatically improves your self-evaluation in other areas. This is the contagion effect.

In the case of the example, something like this could happen:

You have achieved your goal in physical health. Your evaluation goes from 4 to 6. As everything is related, it is very likely that looking better physically, has improved your social relationships somewhat. This makes you feel better emotionally, you enjoy your leisure moments more and this improves your family relationship. Imagine the following effect.

  • Family 7
  • Work and money 8
  • Physical health 6
  • Social relationships 7
  • Emotional state 6
  • Leisure 7

Rebound effect

Now your average is 6.8. You are very close to 7, you upper limit that defines your quality of life standards.

The difficult begins here. It must have happened to you. Magically things start to go wrong!

If you continue with your goal of improving your physical health and you break your average of 7, unconsciously you would start boycotting. Yes, yes, ... as you hear, you would start boycotting yourself.

Perhaps, following the example, going from going 3 times to the GYM to going 5 times, affects your family. You see them less and they make you notice it. And this affects your performance at work. You also do not enjoy your leisure time as your poor work performance haunts you outside of work. And this affects your social relationships and your emotional state..

Your overall quality of life hasn't improved. You are the same again. Yes, you have improved one aspect. But it has been balanced by the rest of areas of your life.

There is a invisible barrier that you can't overcome. And this generates an experience of frustration that it is very likely that you have lived.

Your beliefs condition the expectation you have of your satisfaction in life

And when you get to your upper limit you boycott yourself to keep up to your standards.

The balloon effect

There is a very simple secret and it is the following:

Focus on improving one area while maintaining what you did well in the others.

But this causes what I call the "Balloon effect". The more you blow up a balloon, the more tension is placed on the balloon walls to return to their original state. And if you stop blowing and stop "pressing" the nozzle of the balloon ... it deflates. Because the balloon is elastic!

But you are not elastic ...  You are plastic!. And plastics, subjected to stress for a certain time, experience creep.

Take a look at the belly of a pregnant girl. When you have the baby, the tummy does not instantly return to its original shape.

Improve Life Quality

Therefore, it is about maintaining the focus long enough (they usually say 21 days), so that the creep effect. And during all this time, you need to sustain the tension that you feel as you experience an increase in your standards of living.. And you will notice this tension in all areas of your life!!

And this tension can be very great. The easy ... give up.

But if you can hold this overvoltage, all this time, creep will occur in you and your inner space will grow. You will have created vivid evidence that your old belief was false.

You will experience the subjective feeling that your quality of life has improved. And, in fact, it will have been. If you repeat the Wheel of life your score will be higher.

But not because you wanted to score better, but because the only thing that allows your life to change will have changed. You will have passed a limiting belief and established a better one. And that will have allowed you to improve your quality of life both physically and mentally.

And that's it. A very simple method, to get a very fast result.
