The vegan diet became a lifestyle for many people who are committed to a healthier life and who above all think about the protection of the environment and animals. Although it has great followers, it also has many detractors, who argue that this diet causes malnutrition.
While vegans attribute their slim build to the benefits of their diet, which will allow them to live longer. However, it is not an easy decision to restrict the consumption of meats, which are present everywhere. To make the decision to become vegan, you must have a clear conviction and not assume it as a fad.
Advantage
Protein
Proteins are essential elements for the body's nutrition because amino acids are essential. Although, they are not only found in meats and dairy but also in vegetables. A vegan diet is able to meet this need for protein by legumes, nuts and whole grains.
One of the legumes known for its high percentage of protein is soy, since 100 grams have at least 50% protein. However, there is a small group of people who are intolerant to soy, but have options such as pea protein that has a protein value similar to that of whey or casein, in its most natural form.
Prevent diseases
Vegans through their diet reduce the risk of suffering common diseases, such as type 2 diabetes or cardiovascular disease. This is because they accumulate less fat deposits and absorb nutrients extensively. In addition, avoiding red meat prevents cholesterol and significantly reduces the risk of cancer.
Less vices
In general, vegans are conscious of the environment and of taking care of their body, therefore, they base their diet on reduced alcohol consumption, smoke less frequently and dedicate themselves to doing more physical activity. So, with these habits they are kept in a Healthy weight.
Disadvantages
Vitamin B12 deficiency
Although the vegan diet is rich in nutrients, it has some micronutrient deficiencies that are difficult to extract from vegetables. The vitamin that must be supplied efficiently is the b12 vitamin, which is mainly found in animal origin products, that is why they must be supplemented to cover the corresponding needs.
Limited medications
Vegan people when they go through disease frames often find a shortage of drugs suitable for their lifestyle, because most of the pills contain lactose or gelatin.
Increased depression
Some vegans experience depressive symptoms with no apparent explanation, but several studies found a relationship between this emotional state and deficiencies in zinc, arachidonic acid, and tryptophan. These are the ones in charge of producing serotonin which is the hormone of happiness and its levels are reduced in vegans, due to the elimination of eggs and meat.
