Sex improves your memory

Recent research indicates that sexual activity causes neurogenesis (neuron production) in the hippocampus.

The study was carried out in the Princeton University using young rats. For the study they created two groups of rats, one group would have sex every day and the other group would just have sex once every two weeks.

The results showed a brain cell growth in the group of rats that had practiced sex every day. Neurogenesis occurred mainly in the hippocampus, a structure that contributes to the memory formation and other important cognitive functions. Furthermore, this group of rats also showed lower levels of anxiety.

The researchers wanted to go one step further and repeated the experiment again, but this time using middle aged rats. The results were similar. Regardless of age, continued sex produces neurogenesis in the hippocampus. As a counterpoint, it is important to note that said brain growth disappeared once the rats returned to their usual lifestyle. To maintain neuronal growth in the hippocampus, continued sex was necessary.

On South Korea Similar experiments have been carried out, this time with mice. Unlike the previous study, here they subjected the mice to memory tests after sexual activity. The results showed that the mice that had had sex scored better than those that had not..

In my opinion, studies that follow this line but that relate the physical exercise with hippocampal neurogenesis to be able to elucidate if these results are actually due to sexual practice itself or simply occur as a consequence of having performed a physical activity, whatever it may be..
